LED TV... but first, a clarification!
Certain manufactures have pushed the name LED TV via the media to the point
that some consumers may wrongly believe that the TV panel in such models is
actually based on LED technology. While there probably are "true LED based"
TVs in development, no manufacturer to date has released such a product
(apart from some very small OLED displays, which is yet another technology).
So, in spite of the name, the actual TV panel used in an "LED TV" is still
LCD. the term LED TV simply refers to an LCD TV with LED back lighting.
Philips has been acknowledged as a world leader with regards to the
application of LED backlighting technology. In 2008 Philips became one of
the first manufacturers to introduce LED backlighting for LCD TVs, thereby
removing the final weakness of LCD by establishing new standards for TV
contrast and black level reproduction.
Philips has two type of LED backlighting technologies LED (edge-lit LED backlighting) and LED Pro (direct-lit LED backlighting).
